Companion Influence on Individuals Behavior - Essay Example Also, contemplates have shown that teenagers are increasingly constrained by their companions contrasted with adults. This expanded weakness to peer consistence during pre-adulthood has been communicated as a ââ¬Å"emotional way stationâ⬠that associates the hole between being expressively dependent on guardians during diaper days to turning into an expressively autonomous adult (Fadell and Temkow, 2010). Impact from friends and companion decision are relating forms that work together to produce the adolescentââ¬â¢s social system. Teenagers get companions who are practically identical to them and they also appear to get new companions who are to some degree like their old companions. This hemophilic choice procedure creates strength in the social system. Be that as it may, companions may be indistinguishable on one quality while being unique on others and are never the equivalent to the juvenile. These variations produce open doors for young people to impact the conduct of one another. In outcome of this impact, young people may adjust their methodologies or practices. Subsequently, prospect companionship determination may mirror this change. Subsequently, the youthful social system is best considered as being dynamic where decision and impact team up to create both strength and change for the pre-adult (Luo, et al., 2003). Companion bunches normally foundation unknown guidelines for their individuals conduct that separate them from other friend gatherings. For example, most secondary schools have gatherings of grave understudies, artists, guerillas, competitors, untouchables and by and large situated or appreciated understudies. These gatherings structure a regarded levels of leadership since they have differing statuses. Adolescentââ¬â¢s certainty can be influenced by how they see the evaluation of their individual friend bunch when contrasted with different gatherings. Adults periodically rebuke

Meade, George Gordon Meade, George Gordon, 1815â"72, Union general in the American Civil War, b. Cádiz, Spain. Graduated from West Point in 1835, he resigned from the army the next year and became a civil engineer. In 1842, Meade reentered the army in the corps of topographical engineers. He served in the Mexican War and on various engineering projects. In the Civil War he was made a brigadier general of volunteers (Aug., 1861). In the Seven Days battles (1862), he was severely wounded at Frayser's Farm (or Glendale), but he recovered in time to lead his brigade ably at the second battle of Bull Run. In the Antietam campaign, in the battle of Fredericksburg (1862), and in the battle of Chancellorsville (1863) he distinguished himself further. Meade took command of the Army of the Potomac on June 28, 1863. Several days later he won the important battle of Gettysburg (see Gettysburg campaign ). This brought him a brigadier generalcy in the regular army. He was criticized, however, for not following up his victory. Meade commanded the Army of the Potomac until the end of the war, but Ulysses S. Grant really directed his army in the Wilderness campaign and subsequent operations. He was promoted to major general in the regular army on Grant's recommendation in Aug., 1864. After the war Meade commanded various military departments. See G. A Critical Look at Death of a Salesman
Have you ever loved a rock band that had lots of great songs you cherished? But then the bandââ¬â¢s hit single, the one everyone knows by heart, the one that gets all the airtime on the radio, isnââ¬â¢t a song you particularly admire? Thatââ¬â¢s the way I feel about Arthur Millersà Death of a Salesman. Itââ¬â¢s his most famous play, yet I think it pales in comparison to many of his less popular dramas. Although itââ¬â¢s by no means a bad play, it certainly is overrated in my view. Wheres the Suspense? Well, you have to admit, the title does give everything away. The other day, while I was reading Arthur Millerââ¬â¢s esteemed tragedy, my nine-year-old daughter asked me, ââ¬Å"What are you reading?â⬠I replied, Death of a Salesman, and then at her request, I read a few pages to her. She stopped me and announced, ââ¬Å"Daddy, this is the worldââ¬â¢s most boring mystery.â⬠I got a good chuckle out of that. Of course, itââ¬â¢s a drama, not a mystery. However, suspense is a vital component of tragedy. When we watch a tragedy, we fully anticipate death, destruction, and sadness by the playââ¬â¢s end. But how will the death occur? What will bring about the destruction of the protagonist? When I watched Macbeth for the first time, I guessed that it would conclude with Macbethââ¬â¢s demise. But I didnt know what the cause of his undoing would be. After all, he and Lady Macbeth thought theyââ¬â¢d never be ââ¬Å"vanquished until Great Birnam wood to high Dunsinane Hill shall come against him.â⬠à Like the main characters, I had no idea how a forest could turn against them. It seemed absurd and impossible. Therein lay the suspense: And as the play unfolded, sure enough, the forest comes marching right up to their castle! The main character inà Death of a Salesman, Willy Loman, is an open book. We learn very early on in the play that his professional life is a failure. Heââ¬â¢s the low-man on the totem pole, hence his last name, ââ¬Å"Loman.â⬠(Very clever, Mr. Miller!) Within the first fifteen minutes of the play, the audience learns that Willy is no longer capable of being a traveling salesman. We also learn that he is suicidal. Spoiler! Willy Loman kills himself at the end of the play. But well before the conclusion, it becomes clear that the protagonist is bent upon self-destruction. His decision to kill himself for the $20,000 insurance money comes as no surprise; the event is blatantly foreshadowed throughout much of the dialogue. The Loman Brothers I have a hard time believing in Willy Lomanââ¬â¢s two sons. Happy is the perennially ignored son. He has a steady job and keeps promising his parents that heââ¬â¢s going to settle down and get married. But in reality, heââ¬â¢s never going far in business and plans to sleep around with as many women as possible. Biff is more likable than Happy. He has been toiling on farms and ranches, working with his hands. Whenever he returns home for a visit, he and his father argue. Willy Loman wants him to make it big somehow. Yet, Biff is fundamentally incapable of holding down a 9-to-5 job. Both brothers are in their mid-thirties. Yet, they act as though they are still boys. We dont learn much about them. The play is set in the productive years following World War II. Did the athletic Loman brothers fight in the war? It doesnââ¬â¢t seem like it. In fact, they donââ¬â¢t seem to have experienced much during the seventeen years since their high school days. Biff has been moping. Happy has been philandering. Well-developed characters possess more complexity. By leaps and bounds, their father, Willy Loman, is the strongest, most complex character of Arthur Millerââ¬â¢s play. Unlike many of the showââ¬â¢s flat characters, Willy Loman has depth. His past is a complicated tangle of regrets and undying hopes. Great actors such as Lee J. Cobb and Philip Seymour Hoffman have mesmerized audiences with their portrayals of this iconic salesman. Yes, the role is filled with powerful moments. But is Willy Loman truly a tragic figure? Willy Loman: Tragic Hero? Traditionally, tragic characters (such as Oedipus or Hamlet) were noble and heroic. They possessed a tragic flaw, usually a bad case of hubris, or excessive pride. In contrast, Willy Loman represents the common man. Arthur Miller felt that tragedy could be found in the life of ordinary people. While I agree with this premise, I also have found that tragedy is most powerful when the main characterââ¬â¢s choices become whittled away, much like a masterful yet imperfect chess player who suddenly realizes he is out of moves. Willy Loman has options. He has a lot of opportunities. Arthur Miller seems to be criticizing the American Dream, claiming that corporate America drains the life out of people and casts them away when they are no further use. Yet, Willy Lomanââ¬â¢s successful neighbor continually offers him a job! Willy Loman declines the job without ever explaining why. He has a chance to pursue a new life, but he wont let himself give up his old, soured dreams. Instead of taking the decent paying job, he chooses suicide. At the playââ¬â¢s end, his loyal wife sits at his grave. She does not understand why Willy took his own life. Arthur Miller claims that Willys internalization of the dysfunctional values of American society killed him. An interesting alternate theory would be that Willy Loman suffered from dementia. He exhibits many of the symptoms of Alzheimerââ¬â¢s. In an alternate narrative, his sons and his ever-attentive wife would recognize his failing mental condition. Of course, this version would not qualify as a tragedy either.

Gatsby and Ebb Comparison Free Essays
The portrayals of Barrett Browning and Fitzgerald explore the preferences of idealized love and time throughout both texts with the use of symbolism, imagery, irony and characterization to emphasis these differences. The Great Gatsby set during the Jazz age is an exemplification of the failure and tragedy of the American Dream as well as the fragmented world where love struggles to survive. This contrasted to Elizabeth Barrett Borrowingââ¬â¢s love sonnets set in the wake of the Romantics, making the sonnets in many ways typically Victorian with their tone of gloom and sorrow as well as their feeling of the force and Intensity of their passion as the love grows and develops. We will write a custom essay sample on Gatsby and Ebb Comparison or any similar topic only for you Order Now Time wealth The Great Gatsby exposes how Gatsby Is trying to reincarnate the past by showing to Daisy that he has created an affluent life for himself, thus hoping she will be with him in the future. This illusion creates a sense of irony in the story because Gatsby who has the money to possess and attract anything or anyone, cannot have or buy the thing he most wants and desires; his past love for Daisy. Gatsby nostalgia for his old self and the love that is symbolized is like Fitzgerald portrait of Americaââ¬â¢s nostalgia for its lost values. Like Gatsby, America seems to have everything in the midst of the blooming assââ¬â¢s, but has lost something along the process. Even in the midst of Gatsby corrupt world there Lies a hope in his love for Daisy. This hope Is symbolized by the green light situated at the end of the wharf In front of Delays house at East Egg. This light reminds Gatsby that he Is close to having his dream come true, the dream he so desperately longs for ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ He stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious wayâ⬠¦ L could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward ââ¬â and distinguished nothing except a single green eight, minute and far awayâ⬠, even though he doesnââ¬â¢t have Daisy yet, this green light provides reassurance and hope that he is close to having her in the future. This continuous hope of the past being reincarnated for Gatsby started to seem like it was finally underway with the melancholic tone that the novel resurfaces during Gatsby and Daisyââ¬â¢s reunion at Nickââ¬â¢s house. We are shown through Gatsby melancholic longing his expression painted on his face ââ¬Å"as pale as deathâ⬠which symbolizes not only the sense of nervousness but also the relief of finally reaching the longed for moment of being with Daisy. The tragedy of Gatsby is that he Is being illusion because Daisy who was ââ¬Å"the first nice girl he had ever metâ⬠changed Into a ââ¬Å"materialistic, vacuous Individual who cannot see past herself. This change In characterization triggers the reality that Gatsby dream will never come true no matter now much en nope It wall It Is snow tongue ten novel ten D dream which is never fulfilled and instead he dies for it with the instant bullet which ends it all. Whilst a bullet ends a dream in The Great Gatsby, in the sonnet sequence Elizabeth focuses on the internal, everlasting love between herself and her over which goes beyond the temporal and beyond death. The dynamic nature of her context through her allusions tells us about her world. The nature and power of her love allows her to transcend her society; she can leave the patriarchal oppression of her past behind as well as escape the curtailment of her world because the love is complete. Elizabeth has had a depressing past life and her lover is seen as her rescuer. When they fell in love a sense of restoration is felt by the love they share which brings forth religious beliefs and acts. Elizabeth wants to eliminate the why ND the how and leave the love they share as something that simply is. But love me for loveââ¬â¢s sake, that evermore Thou mast love on, through loveââ¬â¢s eternityââ¬â¢, symbolizes in sonnet XIV, the hope that the love they have is going to be everlasting ââ¬Å"through loveââ¬â¢s eternityââ¬â¢ ââ¬â going beyond mortality Juxtaposed to The Great Gatsby where the dream of being loved again ends all to suddenly with a bullet. We can see from this sonnet Elizabeth already knows that the love they share is so strong that it will b eat all odds and last forever. Throughout all of Elizabethan sonnets we come to realization hat the love she is experiencing has the power of an earthbound love which is everlasting, this is specifically shown in sonnet XII ââ¬Å"face to face, silent drawing nigh and Niger, until the lengthening wings break into fire, At either curved pointâ⬠¦ What bitter wrong, can the earth do to us, that we should not be there contentedâ⬠, which symbolizes that their love is so strong that even after death they will meet again in heaven. This shows that through time their love will only grow and develop and she is hoping that even after death there love will become stronger than ever. Within this Monet she also uses imagery when imagining their relationship after morality because she feels that it will continue. Elizabethan final sonnet, COLI, expresses her final declaration of the everlasting, unconditional love she is experiencing ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ L shall but love thee better after my deathâ⬠. Even after death she is going to love her lover more profoundly, consequently from this it is shown that through time the love her and her lover share will go beyond the temporal and against all odds. In contrast with The Great Gatsby where Gatsby dream to re-incarnate the past so that he can e with the one he loves is essentially Just an illusion which ends with a bullet, the sonnets by Elizabeth Barrett Browning articulates the unconditional transcendent nature of love which is everlasting and goes beyond mortality; where the love between Elizabeth and her lover will continue to grow. Idealized love in The Great Gatsby is oppressive and destructive. Through the narration of Nick Caraway we are exposed to a post WWW new world which is faithless, loveless and careless, thus making idealized love difficult to survive. Gatsby infatuation of Daisy as the ultimate commodity is seen as his goal from which he tries to draw closer to. The type of love that is shown from Gatsby towards Daisy is the obsessive but pure love which becomes something too special to survive in a world that lacks moral purpose. Gatsby bases his love on the relationship he had with Daisy years before. It was Gatsby who was ââ¬Å"breathlessâ⬠and saw her gleaming Like silver, sate Ana proud above ten not struggles AT ten poorâ⬠I Nils Imagery Tanat Gatsby uses to describe Daisy shows how deeply in love he was with her even though he knew that he wasnââ¬â¢t rich and that it was obvious that she came from an affluent background. In order to be closer to Daisy, Gatsby buys a mansion across Daisy symbolizing the need for him to be close to her as well as the parties he arranges at his house which are illuminated with lights. These lights attract the ââ¬Å"mothsâ⬠who are Gatsby party guests but are created initially to attract Daisy to his house, thus hopefully emerging her closer to him so that their love can grow and Gatsby dream become fulfilled. However the barriers separating them from being together can also be symbolized by the love and the classification of the two villages. While Daisy lives in the East which was associated with the extravagance living which offered opportunities, Gatsby lived in the West which stood for traditional values such as solidity. These barriers added to the factors of why Gatsby could only ââ¬Å"dreamâ⬠of having Daisy because life interfered with their love. This pure love that once blossomed canââ¬â¢t be recaptured again in the present and though Gatsby pursues his grail the moment is gone. Gatsby hope of being with Daisy the one who he truly loves and infatuates over dies with him. In The Great Gatsby , idealized love becomes an essence of destruction and delusion, this is partly due to it attempting to arrive in the fragmented post war America Juxtaposed with the sonnets by Elizabeth Barrett Browning where idealized love flourishes through its power to be transcendent and restorative. Idealized love is represented in a deep meaningful way in Elizabeth Barrett Borrowings sonnets. Through the persona of Elizabeth it is shown how love is powerful, it transformed her life, giving her new hope. The ââ¬Å"silver ringâ⬠symbolizes that things are getting better; this is shown by the sense of restoration that their love has brought to her life. The love shown between Elizabeth and her lover is not terrestrials; it is idealistic love. Elizabeth states in sonnet XIV that she wants her lover to love her for the sake of love,â⬠If thou must love me, let it be for enough Except for loveââ¬â¢s sake onlyââ¬â¢. Juxtaposition to The Great Gatsby where Gatsby had to modify his life in order to try and get Daisy to love him again, Elizabeth spiritually believes their love is pure and of transcendence; she doesnââ¬â¢t want anything other than their pure love. Through this we see that the characteristics of the Victorian era in terms of qualities is something Elizabeth disregards. She believes that idealized love should e on the basis of feelings instead of traits as they can change. The last sonnet shows that their love must be enjoyed within all the dimensions of physical passion and the strength of that physical passion adds a spiritual dimension. Earthly love is aligned with spiritual fulfillment ââ¬Å"How do I love thee? Let me count the waysâ⬠¦ â⬠Explores all the dimensions of their love due to it being measured by the breadth, width and depth ââ¬â they must be vast. If love is sublime in the sonnet sequence, we can conclude that it is tawdry in The Great Gatsby. In conclusion time and idealized love is shown to be analyses differently between Borrowings and Fitzgerald portrayals. Time shows how Gatsby tries to re-incarnate the past by showing to Daisy that he has changed himself so that hopefully their ââ¬Å"loveâ⬠can Dollops once again UT D tens Illusion ones when Gatsby ales Wendell In ten sonnets the love that is shared between Elizabeth and her lover is restorative and transcendent and goes beyond death where it will continue to grow. Love is shown by both texts to be powerful and necessary for fulfillment. Elizabeth Barrett Browning suggests that love is not only possible but necessary whereas Fitzgerald sees that love may be necessary but is not possible. How to cite Gatsby and Ebb Comparison, Papers

Witchcraft Essays (1008 words) - Witchcraft, Wicca, Pseudohistory
Witchcraft For nearly two centuries, witchcraft seemed to have disappeared. Although it was driven underground for a time, it is now the fastest growing religion in the United States. There are several reasons for its disappearance and now, for its return. Until the fifteenth century, witchcraft was not considered an evil practice. It was about that time that the Catholic church started labeling witches as heretics and sinners because of their belief in social rebellion. The idea of social rebellion was also a rebellion against the church, which taught that It was the duty of the common people to endure the tyranny of authority, no matter how oppressive. (Donovan 118) There were also the other acts in the rituals of witchcraft which included feasting and dancing, both of which the church considered rebellious. But, it was not until the end of the fifteenth century that witchcraft got the reputation of being a satanic religion. The idea of a purely diabolical witchcraft was said to have been invented by the Roman Catholics to supply a way to destroy the threat of the heretic Germans. The idea of satan as an evil figure in religion was not even in the Old Testament, it was put there for an easy way to accuse people. Witches were seen worshipping a horned God, so the church created a horned figure that they related to evil, they called this figure satan. But the creation of this figure did much more than kill just Germans. The theory that witches were devil worshippers gave the church license to begin persecuting them as heretics, and they did. It was the beginning of two hundred years of torture and execution. In those two hundred years it has been estimated that anywhere from 200,000 to 9,000,000 people were executed or met their death. These people were cruelly tortured, tormented, and harassed until they confessed, and then they were tortured again to be sure that they had given a full confession and that they had been properly purified. Some tortures included strapping the accused's feet in a pair of metal boots and then filling the boots with boiling hot oil. The accused were often whipped for their purification, sometimes they were left out in the open for hours after having been whipped while the torturers went out to lunch. They had to hang there and wait until they returned and often they received additional torture after their wait just to be certain they had been purified. Tortures were so extreme that many people took their practices underground to avoid the Inquisition. Tyagi stated on his website on witchcraft that up to 90% of the people executed probably were not witches. They were innocents who happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, or have some abnormal traits or habits, or even just being the wrong person could be a sufficient reason. It was not until after the Salem witch trials that people really started to see how foolish the entire witch-hunt was. By then, the entire witchcraft population had been either killed or scared off by the hunters. But, even after the trials, people still practiced the rituals and beliefs. It became a family religion, passed down from generation to generation. It also stayed alive in small isolated areas where it was practiced in folk customs and in their celebrations and festivals. It just proves the incredible integrity of those involved. Those who still secretly practiced witchcraft kept their secret for many years. It was not until after World War I that witchcraft started to make a comeback. Even then it was still kept underground for fear of it losing its spiritual inspiration if it was practiced publicly and for an audience. By the 1960's witches began to feel free enough to practice the Craft openly, and by the 1970's there were many public groups. Quite a few of these groups were feminists who had adopted witchcraft as a feminist movement. Witchcraft started to return at this time because of a general change in the people of the United States as Scott Moreau said in the Evangelical Dictionary of Theology. He says that a large reason for its return is because people started thinking magically again, rather
